How many people work in gardens at night using a head lamp?
Carolyn Williams of Wailua does.
In a press release from Helena Cooney, chairperson of a committee which accepts nominations for beautiful yards in the 96746 zip code areas, Williams is a flight attendant for Hawaiian Airlines and works in her garden between her job duties.
Williams has been grooming and tending her garden for 12 years, describing her attention to the garden as a labor of love.
“This is her serenity, her peace from all the complaints at work,” Cooney said in the release.
The entire 1/2-acre plot was designed on paper before Williams set out with help from her brother on the Mainland and her mother from Oma‘o.
“Each section has a different theme and color scheme,” Cooney said. “Any golf course and resort would love to have this yard.”
That garden contributes to making her street in the Wailua Homesteads beautiful, and Williams was nominated for the Neighborhood Pride award by Jo-Ann Harunaga, Williams’ neighbor in Wailua.
Williams will be presented the award during the monthly meeting of the Wailua-Kapa‘a Neighborhood Association which will be held Saturday from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. at the Kapa‘a Public Library.
Pat Griffin will be the featured speaker, discussing “Saving the ‘Opaeka‘a and Pu‘uopae Bridges: Does History Matter?”
