Robert Cariffe said he is returning for his seventh bid for election to the Kaua‘i County Council since first campaigning in 1996. Cariffe officially filed his papers on April 8.
On Thursday, he took his campaign efforts to Kuhio Highway, carrying a “Bob Cariffe for Council” sign wrapped in plastic, and bags filled with bottles, cans and glass litter he collected from the roadside. Cariffe has become well-known for picking up litter along the island’s highways.
Cariffe said he estimates he fills a bag every mile along his walk from Hanama‘ulu to the Wailua Bridge.
In past election years, the candidate has campaigned for stronger policing of absentee voting results, drug and crime prevention and drawing attention to litter.
The candidate did not discuss his platform for the current election when interviewed Thursday.
Cariffe’s previous six election bids were unsuccessful.
