During the week of May 12-18, the Salvation Army Lihu‘e and Hanapepe thrift stores will be offering shoppers a 50 percent discount on their purchases in celebration of Salvation Army Week on Kaua‘i.
Additionally, as part of the week-long celebration, the Hanapepe Corps will be holding its Seventh Annual Island-wide Senior Citizens Luncheon on May 14 from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. All seniors are welcome.
On May 17th the Hanapepe Corps will be hosting Kaua‘i’s First Annual Hobby & Collectors Expo for collectors of all kinds n stamps, coins, mini-trains and much more n open to the public, vendors welcome to attend and participate.

Additionally, paper kettles showing support for the Salvation Army will be on sale at Sueoka Store in Koloa during the week.
The Salvation Army’s only business on Kaua‘i, as everywhere, is still human business, undertaken with the joy for the family of humankind, states a mayoral proclamation which was presented to Captain Mitham Clement and envoys Larry and Joy Groenleer.
The Salvation Army serves the people of Kaua‘i with unshakable faith in all, no matter how desperate the situation, and views all individuals as people with possibilities, the proclamation continues.
During 2006, about 20,000 less fortunate individuals on Kaua‘i were served by The Salvation Army through the physical provisions of food, shelter, household items, clothing, utility assistance as well as spiritual enrichment.

The Emergency Food Pantry provides food baskets of non-perishable food to those who are unable to make ends meet. The pantry is available from Monday through Friday, weekends if there is an urgent need.
The Kokua Soup Kitchens provide nutritious hot meals three times a week, to anyone in need of a meal. As part of the week’s celebration, a new stove and range hood contributed by the Rotary Club of Kapa‘a in memory of one of its members will be dedicated at the Lihu‘e Corps.
Emergency assistance may include temporary lodging, utility bill assistance, clothing, household items, emergency financial assistance, and rental assistance after emergencies such as fire or flood.
Emergency Disaster Services are available in cooperation with federal, state and local agencies. The Salvation Army is equipped and ready to serve the public in event of major disasters such as floods, fires, earthquakes and hurricanes. Services include victim identification, food, housing, furnishings, clothing, counseling, referral and spiritual comfort to disaster victims.
Community Care Ministries include visitation of nursing homes, hospitals and other appropriate establishments for the purpose of sharing the love of God and bringing encouragement in the time of need.
President Dwight D. Eisenhower signed the first proclamation in 1954 for the first National Salvation Army Week.
