Mokihana Club awards music scholarship and honorarium
Kaua’i High School senior and euphonium player Andrew Renaud was awarded a $2,000 college scholarship by the Mokihana Club. The award followed his performance April 4 of Vivaldi’s “Sonate a-Moll,” and was based on Renaud’s musical and scholastic achievements, as well as high recommendations from his teachers.
“Music is something in his life that helps widen his smile,” Mokihana Club first vice-president and music chair Carolyn Knepper said of Renaud. Renaud plans to attend Arizona Western College.
Following the same event, a $250 honorarium was awarded by the club to Maggie Celebrado for her continuing college education. Celebrado is this year’s Miss Kaua’i Filipina and performed several pieces on the club’s 9-foot Grotrian Steinweg grand piano.
Since beginning the music scholarship program in 1970, the club has awarded scholarships totaling over $90,000 to college-bound music students. The purpose of the competition is to encourage talented graduating Kaua’i students to continue their studies at institutions of higher learning.
