Christine Yotsuda, a senior at Kapa‘a High School, topped a field of five contestants to emerge as the 2008 Miss Kaua‘i Filipina over the weekend.
Topping her list of prizes, Yotsuda earned $2,000 in cash, a four-year scholarship to Chaminade University of Honolulu and 30 credits at the Kaua‘i Community College.
En route to the crown of the scholarship pageant, Yotsuda earned top honors in the Interview and Swimsuit phases of competition and was presented the Spirit Award for the most tickets and ads sold and collected, states a press release from the Kaua‘i Filipino Community Council.
Lea Lee Tumaneng was crowned the First Runner Up and will be ready to represent the KFCC in the event Yotsuda is crowned Miss Hawai‘i Filipina at the state pageant later this year.
Tumaneng earned special awards in Best in Terno Speech Phase, Most Congenial, the Spirit Award for most tickets sold, as well as Most Photogenic.
Kristyn Ishibashi, topping the Talent phase with a hula done to “These Islands,” was crowned the second runner up. She also captured the Most Beautiful Terno special award.
Liza Cabal Trinidad, chair for the pageant, said the contestants shared more than $38,000 in cash and prizes. That included each contestant earning a trophy, cash and other items amounting to more than $400 for their participation.
Earlier this month, the Miss Kaua‘i Filipina Scholarship Committee hosted its first-ever golf tournament at the Wailua Golf Course to help generate funds for scholarships.
The Miss Kaua‘i Filipina Pageant is a project of the KFCC for the purpose of raising funds for its scholarship program.
In addition to Yotsuda, Tumaneng and Ishibashi, Charlene Rivera and Lovely Hyde rounded out the field of contestants.
