Congratulations to Jocelyn Barriga (Shelly Gerardo was picking up the rice) and the rest of her Kaua‘i Special Olympics crew on a great event, Saturday!
Was nice to see Kauai Police Department Chief Darryl Perry come out for the event, and of course, Lt. Mark Scribner (you cannot start an event without Lt. Mark) and Zack Octavio who had his American Medical Response crew out for the event as well.
The track and field kicks off a whole year of good events that all help the Special Olympic athletes who live here, and this year it was heart-warming to see the East Kaua‘i Lions (John Ochoco can still run pretty fast) join the group of volunteers. Ron Garlie was up at 6:30 a.m. at First Hawaiian Bank because Kelvin Moniz told him to be there, and even Mike Murakoshi was able to get up after the KCC Gala Friday night.
Hats off to football coaches Keli‘i Morgado (they come to support you, so you need to come to support them), Trent Shimabukuro (it’s the best thing we do in the year!) and Kyle Linoz for getting their football boys to come out and support the athletes. You could feel the difference having the football players made just in the way the athletes responded.
Joey Banasihan and Andrew Renaud gave the athletes (especially the Red Raider ones) the extra special touch, and Tiffany Ikeda-Simao came out with coach Richard Matsumoto to help present the ribbons after she tied the Girls Triple Jump record with her Friday night performance. And the list goes on and on with all the volunteers (Doug Sears got the help of Douglas in raking the Long Jump pit) being extra special on the Special Olympics day.
