HONOLULU — The University of Hawai‘i Athletics Department ranks 47th out of 243 Division I schools nationally in the U.S. Sports Academy Directors’ Cup standings with a total of 262.5 points.
UH earned 132 points during the fall sports season and 130.5 during the winter.
The U.S. Sports Academy Directors’ Cup was developed as a joint effort between the National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics and USA Today to chart the overall success of the nation’s Division I athletics programs.
Hawai‘i, BYU, and Harvard are the only non-Bowl Championship Series schools ranked in the Top 50 and UH is the highest-ranked Western Athletic Conference school, followed by Boise State (81st) and Nevada (91st).
Since 1993, Hawai‘i’s highest final ranking was 61st during the 2005-06 season.
Last year, Hawai‘i finished 62nd with 315.5 total points. Points are awarded based on each institution’s finish in up to 20 sports – 10 women’s and 10 men’s.
During the winter sports season, the women’s swimming and diving finished 26th nationally and received 48 points and men’s swimming and diving finished 23rd and scored 50.5 points. Women’s indoor track and field ranked 39th and received 32 points.
Emma Friesen, a sophomore women’s diver, won the national championship in the 1-meter diving final and Magnus Frick finished second and sixth in the NCAA Championships in the one-meter and three-meter diving finals, respectively. The UH indoor track and field team finished second at the WAC Championships, its highest finish in school history.
During the fall sports season, Hawai‘i garnered points in football (57), women’s soccer (25), and women’s volleyball (50).
Both the soccer and volleyball programs advanced to their respective NCAA Tournaments, while the football team participated in the Allstate Sugar Bowl and earned points for finishing the season ranked 17th nationally.
Of the 11 sports used to tally the winter point total, Hawai‘i fields teams in five. In addition to men’s and women’s swimming and diving and women’s indoor track and field, Hawai‘i also sponsors men’s and women’s basketball. Of the eight sports used to tally the fall point total, UH fields teams in four.
In addition to football, women’s volleyball, and women’s soccer, UH also sponsors women’s cross country.
The United States Sports Academy, based in Daphne, Ala., is the program’s sponsor.
