HANAPEPE — Keith Nonaka drove in Keith Fernadez for the winning run as Waimea High School’s baseball team rallied to beat Kapa‘a High School 10-9 in nine innings yesterday at Hanapepe Stadium.
Overall, there were 24 hits and 21 strikeouts in the game.
The Warriors were up 7-4 by the fourth inning, but ended up not scoring another run after the sixth.
Andrew Ouderkirk was awarded the winning 12/3 innings, allowing no runs or hits. Alex Palacio, who started the game, pitched three innings, giving up five runs on three hits, five of them earned. Chris Kaiakapu followed to pitch 12/3 innings, giving up two runs, two earned, two hits and striking out four. Next, Waimea sent Isaa Horner to the mound for an inning. He also gave up two runs, two earned on two hits. That set Ouderkirk to come in as the closer.
Allen Pancho went 2-for-3 and scored twice, Gavin Jardin went 3-for-3 with a walk and scored in the seventh.
Paul Correa hit a triple and scored in the fifth inning. Other runs came from Max Agor, Jayrald Watanabe, Kelly Batis, who hit a double in the sixth, and Nonaka, who scored twice.
Travis Shigeta started for Kapa‘a and went five innings, giving up six runs, five earned, allowing 10 hits and striking out 10. Cody Goias was given the loss yesterday, going 3 1/3 innings and giving up Waimea’s winning run.
Shigeta hit a double and scored in the third inning and hit a home run in the fifth. B.J. Aiwohi scored three times for Kapa‘a and Braden Kamibayashi hit a double and scored once.
There are no games scheduled for this weekend as Kaua‘i High School clinched the Round 1 title last weekend.
The next set of games will be on April 5 when Kapa‘a hosts Kaua‘i at the Ron Martin Field.
