A collaborative tsunami evacuation drill is scheduled for 9:45 a.m. tomorrow on the Westside.
The schools involved will be Kekaha Elementary School (319 students), St. Theresa School (150 students), Kula Aupuni Ni‘ihau a Kahealani Aloha School (46 students), Kekula Ni‘ihau o Kekaha School (40 students), a total of 555 students, plus staff.
The drill will give each school the oppportunity to evaluate the effectiveness of the individual school’s evacuation plan evacuation school’s plan with a total shutdown, the timing of how quickly and safely all walking and driven students can reach the designated evacuation site which would be at least 100 feet from the identified inundated danger zone and observe what possible bottlenecks may be created as each heads towards Koke‘e and higher ground areas.
Observers from the police and fire departments, Kaua‘i Civil Defense, PMRF, Hawai‘i state DOE, and NOAA will be on hand as well.
A follow-up evaluation meeting will be held on Monday, at 9 a.m. in the Kekaha School cafeteria.
