A man accused of possession of methamphetamine and stealing copper could face 20 years in prison after pleading guilty yesterday in Fifth Circuit Court.
Terrence Oliver Jr. faces the possibility of an extended sentence after agreeing to a deal in which he pled guilty to second-degree theft and third-degree promotion of a dangerous drug.
Prosecutors lessened the number of charges against him by five counts as part of the deal.
Deputy Prosecutor Lila Kanae said Oliver was driving a flatbed truck filled with copper pipes and wires with a scrap price of $437.50 when he was stopped by police Sept. 14, 2008.
She also said police recovered straws, baggies, and an “ice”-like substance that tested positive for methamphetamine upon his arrest.
Though Fifth Circuit Judge Kathleen Watanabe doesn’t have to honor any agreement hashed out between prosecutors and the defense, Kanae said her office will not seek enhanced or consecutive sentencing.
Watanabe ordered a pre-sentence investigation. Oliver will be sentenced at 9 a.m. April 23 in courtroom 6.
