WAIMEA — Waimea JV player Malcolm Carter scored a game-high 24 points, but the JV Menehune came up short 53-42 against Kaua‘i in a tight contest, Wednesday.
“Malcolm is one of their dangerous players,” said Kaua‘i coach Derek Borrero.
“We tried to take away his right hand, but he can do things with his left hand — maybe not as strong as his right, but still dangerous.”
Holding a 26-20 halftime lead, Kaua‘i erupted for a 14-3 third quarter behind 4-point contributions from Austin Simao and Cody Morden.
But Waimea answered with a 19-12 final frame paced by 8 points from Carter, 6 points from Dayton Bayot who finished with 8 points total. A 3-point bomb from Micha Rita rounded out the explosion.
Following Carter’s lead, Waimea got 8 points from Bayot, 4 points from Christian Tangalin and 3 points each from Rita and VJ Carineo.
Morden and Nikko Chow paced the Raiders’ offense with 14 and 11 points, respectively.
They were followed by Simao finishing with 10 points, Cameron Largusa adding 5 points and 4 points each coming from Joe Duronslet, Davone Florence and Nathan Wong.
Waimea closes off its season tomorrow when it travels to Kapa‘a starting at 5 p.m.
