In an effort to inform the public about the county of Kaua‘i’s motor vehicle and traffic regulations, the Kaua‘i Police Department’s Patrol Services Bureau has launched a public awareness campaign.
“We did a pilot project by designating December as Accessible Parking Awareness Month,” said Capt. Ale Quibilan, according to a county press release. “The project was successful so we decided to expand upon the idea by informing the public about various traffic ordinances throughout the year.”
The traffic law that the Patrol Services Bureau is focusing on this month is entitled Mudguards Required.
It comes under Section 16-17.31 of the Kauai County Code: No person shall operate on any highway any motor vehicle, trailer, or semi-trailer unless equipped with fenders, cover, flares, mud flaps or splash aprons or unless the body of the vehicle covers the width of the tire tread for adequate protection to effectively protect against spray or splash of water, mud, rocks or other debris that could be propelled by the tires.
“The intent of this ordinance is to prevent damage particularly to other vehicles sharing the roadway,” said Quibilan, adding that patrol officers will be issuing traffic citations to operators who are in violation of this ordinance.
“We hope that information, education and enforcement is the right combination to making our roadways safer,” Quibilan said.
“As police officers, it is our duty to provide for a safe environment for our citizens, which includes the enforcement of all laws.”
