Waimea comes back

KAPA‘A — Waimea’s Cheri Kua netted a dozen second-half points to lead the Menehune to a 44-34 comeback last night at the Bernice Hundley Gym.

Trailing through three quarters, Lorrine Lagoc-Agrade ignited the crowd with a bomb from outside the 3-point arm to tie the contest 30-30 at the 5:45 mark.

From there, the Menehune sewed up the victory as its defense held Kapa‘a scoreless for the final two minutes of play.

Kua topped all scorers with her 12 points, including going 6-for-6 at the charity stripe, followed by Lagoc-Agrade finishing with 10 points.

Erin Connelly, who along with sister Mollie, was key in keeping Waimea in the chase from late in the first quarter, finished with 6 points with Mollie netting 4 points, but adding a lot of power inside.

Kapa‘a took the early lead behind guard Sarah Tangalin who netted her game-total 9 points in the first half. Leilani Laranio followed with 8 points, and Jondi Das added 5 points.

Kapa‘a broke a 19-18 halftime deficit to outgun Waimea 21-11 en route to a 36-29 win in the JV contest that saw the audience actively cheering on both sides.

Shayln Tupou topped the Warrior scoring with 7 points followed by Ashlyn Lee, Jessilyn Artano-Aki and Justine Holt each netting 6 points in a balanced scoring effort. Kira Nakamura finished with 5 points, Jodi Das dropped 4 points and a pair from Lahela Creamer rounded out the books.

Searra Kaohi finished with a game-high 10 points to pace the Waimea effort followed by Breeann Abuan adding 6 points, and Charlyn Ortiz netting 4 points.

Kapa‘a will host Kaua‘i High School, Friday night with the JV contest tipping off at 5:30 p.m.
