Destiny Smith hooked in a layup in the third quarter last night in the Kaua‘i Interscholastic Federation’s girls basketball season opener in which Kapa‘a High School beat Kaua‘i High School 51-33 at Kaua‘i.
Right after that layup, Smith followed up with another one to put the Warriors up to a 12-point lead. Kapa‘a was the more offensively aggressive team coming up with 11 steals.
The Warriors enjoyed their biggest lead of the night in the fourth quarter when they were up by 23 points.
Smith finished the night with 12 points and three rebounds. Kapa‘a’s biggest scorer was Mailika Napoleon who posted 21 points, was 4-for-4 from the free throw line and had five rebounds. Senior Sarah Tangalin had seven points.
Momentum for Kaua‘i seemed to pick up late in the fourth quarter coming up with 11 points, but it wasn’t enough to rally from behind. Kathleen Cadiente was Kaua‘i’s leading scorer with 12 points. Her sister Kelsey Cadiente had eight.
In the junior varsity match earlier that afternoon, Kapa‘a blew out Kaua‘i 63-23. Kapa‘a had three girls go into double digits in scoring. Kira Nakamura had 22 points. Justine Holt scored 18 points, while Jessilyn Artaho-Aki had 15.
The Warriors best quarter came in the third when they scored 21 points.
Kaua‘i’s Uila Ahosui led the Red Raiders with 7 points.
Kaua‘i travels to Waimea High School on Friday.
