In reflecting on 2007, many things have changed for my family and me, with the most significant being my appointment as your new police chief. While acknowledging that new changes take time and patience, there is still a need to move forward at a quicker tempo toward improvement.
High on my list is open communication with community members, to restore trust and confidence in your police department. Truthful and open dialog is the key. As one example, several meetings were held to better understand our law enforcement’s role to reach consensus and compromise with groups who have concerns about the upcoming Superferry’s arrival in Nawiliwili.
The meetings with Hui-R, the Polynesian Kingdom of Atoo‘i, and members of the environmental group 1000 Friends of Kaua‘i were very productive, as they were able to voice their viewpoints and ask questions. We openly and truthfully explained our law enforcement duties and responsibilities, and requested their cooperation.
And while we did agree to disagree in some areas of concern, we still agreed that safety, respect and treating one another with dignity were essential components in maintaining productive relationships. I look forward to more open, meaningful and truthful dialogue.
In closing, all employees of the Kaua‘i Police Department look forward to a brighter 2008 to better serve and protect our citizens and visitors in our beautiful island home.
