KAPA‘A — Marc Kawai Peahu was trying for a hat trick, and Sierra Mayer was testing her wings as a goalkeeper Friday night.
But the hat trick never materialized and a tiring first-time goalkeeper finished with 35 saves on 42 shot attempts.
“When I was younger, I always wanted to be a goalie, but now, I don’t really care to be one,” an exhausted Sierra commented during a time out late in the Bantam division game at the Kapa‘a inline skating facility.
Todd Mayer, the coach for the green-shirted team, said they were skating without any substitutes and Peahu already had two goals to his credit in the first half which ended on a 4-4 tie.
“He just needs one more for a hat trick,” Todd said. “Just one more goal.”
But that goal never materialized as the Devils’ defense tightened up and never allowed a green goal until the final five minutes of play when Cascade Mayer rifled a shot past the stretched-out defensive effort of Devils’ goalkeeper Daniel Alonzo.
Todd tried to adjust his team to an offensive mode, but the lack of fresh legs on the field took its toll along with a tight Devils defense as the clock ran out on a long court shot by the green team that died just outside of Alonzo’s reach at the buzzer to give the Devils a 7-5 victory.
Mathias Davis finished with a hat trick to lead the Devils’ attack which saw three goals being netted in the second half to break the halftime stalemate.
Jacob Lewis, who netted a goal in the first half, opened up the second half within the first three minutes of play, scoring off an assist from Cydney Sitzler.
Lewis closed the Devils’ scoring with the tail end of a scoring pair that came less than three minutes after his opening volley.
Davis netted his third goal of the game at the 14:05 mark followed by the Lewis goal at the 13:59 mark.
Following Davis, Lewis netted a hat trick as well followed by Sitzler who had a goal and two assists.
Throughout the game, the Mayer green team played catch-up with Kala Yee answering the Devils’ opening goal at the 11:21 mark on an assist from Cascade. Three minutes later, the Yee-Cascade combo yielded the green’s second score.
Cascade, playing the stopper position, figured in the green’s third score along with Stephanie Steuri who fed Peahu for his first goal of the night at the 6:50 mark.
The YMCA of Kaua‘i Inline Hockey League continues its season play today at the Kapa‘a facility starting at 1:30 p.m.
There is no admission to view the competition.
