Ninety-four-year-old Lani needs Ensure and groceries.
They are just two of the 791 needy Kauaians who will be helped this year by the local Zonta Club, The Garden Island newspaper and the people of Kaua‘i.
More than $23,175 was distributed earlier this month to agencies representing 791 needy Kauaians, courtesy of the Zonta/The Garden Island Christmas fund.
For more than 25 years, the Zonta Club and The Garden Island have teamed up to raise money to make the holidays a little happier for those less fortunate. Agencies such as Easter Seals and Kaua‘i Economic Opportunity have submitted the names of clients who are especially in need of help. Each year, the number of cases has grown until this year, more than 288 cases representing 791 adults and children asked for help.
The Garden Island published their stories on its front page every day from Thanksgiving through Christmas Eve and generous donors contribute what they can to make their simple needs become a reality whenever possible.
At a Zonta Club luncheon meeting this month, envelopes containing certificates were handed out to representatives of the different agencies.
Certificates were also distributed to the Agency on Elderly Affairs, Alu Like, Inc., DOH/Community Service for the Developmentally Disabled, and the Wilcox Adult Day Care.
