Gear up for the playoffs
by Roy Skaggs – Special to the garden island
If you are still playing, let me be the first to congratulate you. As we know by now, this is by no means an easy task. My best advice to you is to look at your player’s team and where they are in the playoff hunt. A player on the Colts could very well be resting next week. That’s the same for the Seahawks, Cowboys and Pittsburg players. Many leagues end on the 15th game.
Either way, some players will not play a full game, if at all. Make sure to have a better alternative, just in case.
Put me in (Start)
• Quarterbacks
The Cardinals are in the playoff hunt so nobody will be sitting just yet. Kurt Warner makes a great play against my Saints. On that same token, Drew Brees will try to steer New Orleans into the playoffs as well. My franchise quarterback is Carson Palmer (Bengals) and he hasn’t thrown a touchdown in two weeks. That trend will stop in San Francisco this week.
• Running backs
Willis McGahee (Ravens) is going to rumble all over the Fins. This could be a great game for Rudi Johnson (Bengals) who has likely been on your bench for a bit. Aaron Stecker (Saints) could be a very nice fill-in if you need a player down the stretch.
• Wide receivers
After a slow start, Chris Chambers (Chargers) has come on to be a good target opposite Antonio Gates. When you have a quarterback about to break the NFL record, it’s good to get any of his receivers and Jabar Gaffney (Patriots) has been on fire recently.
• Tight ends
The Redskins are in the heat of a playoff hunt and Chris Cooley has been their best receiver. With the injury to Bubba Franks, Donald Lee (Packers) has become a viable tight end.
Hold my clipboard (Sit)
• Quarterbacks
The Lions started strong this season but the last half schedule is brutal and Jon Kitna has completely regressed. A guy who may rest in the second half soon enough is Ben Roethlisberger (Steelers).
• Running backs
The Saints are actually No. 8 against the run, so that doesn’t bode well for Edgerrin James (Cardinals) who hasn’t scored a TD in three weeks. It’s hard to sit Clinton Portis (Redskins) but if you have a better alternative, I would use it. Fragile Fred Taylor (Jaguars) has been great recently.
• Wide receivers
Greg Jennings has clearly become Favre’s favorite target and Donald Driver (Packers) has suffered the most. Although he has had a great rookie season, Dwayne Bowes’ (Chiefs) numbers have dwindled with Croyle under center. In case you missed it, Jake Delhomme is out for the season!
• Tight ends
With an aerial attack like the Saints have, you have to wonder how Eric Johnson has such low numbers every week.
