The Garden Island newspaper and the Zonta Club of Kauai are teaming up this year, and asking the community to help make the holidays happier for less-fortunate residents through the Zonta/The Garden Island Christmas Fund.
From now through Christmas Eve, Dec. 24, The Garden Island will share stories of families who could use a little holiday cheer along with an appeal for monetary donations of any size. The names have been changed to protect their privacy. Funds raised will be distributed to needy families by Zonta Club members, who purchase gift certificates at appropriate businesses to help make these simple wishes come true.
Because of logistical limitations, only monetary donations can be accepted. Gift certificates and used or new items, while appreciated, should not be submitted.
Kathy’s heart
Kathy is recovering from congestive heart failure while still battling her high blood pressure, high cholesterol and searing acid reflux. She was recently realeased from the hospital and requires more prescription drugs in order to get well; her monthly Social Security benefits are used entirely towards paying the prescription costs. Kathy’s health would improve with Ensure and other food items.
Lisa relies on others to take her to appointments
Lisa is no longer able to drive, and at 90 years old, depends on others to drive her to all of her appointments; she has many medical appointments due to arthritis, vision and hearing impairment, high blood pressure, water rentention, and Lisa has a brain tumor that still is yet to be addressed. Lisa needs extra care and help in getting her the nutritious foods she needs to stay strong.
A mattress and blanket for Bernice’s van
Bernice is homeless and has been relocating from beach to beach where she lives in her van. Bernice would love to get into housing, but her Social Security checks are not enough for her to make payments on rent. She suffers from many medical problems and has to use her limited income to pay for the many necessary medications prescribed by her physicians; some of her prescriptions are not covered by Medicare. Bernice could use a new folding mattress and a blanket that she can lay out in her van to make life a little more comfortable through the holidays.
