The Kaua‘i Buddhist Council is sponsoring a Bodhi Day service at Lihu‘e Hongwanji Mission at 9:30 a.m. on Sunday.
The speaker will be Manulani Aluli Meyer, Ed.D. Aluli Meyer received her Ed.D in Philosophy of Education, Harvard University Graduate School of Education, 1998. She is an Associate Professor of Education at the University of Hawai‘i at Hilo. Currently she is studying the close ties between the dharma and “general systems theory” and how they apply to transforming education and helping our world heal.
The Kaua‘i Buddhist Council is made up of traditions from Japanese and Tibetan Buddhism. After a long struggle of various studies and meditation under a Bodhi tree, on Dec. 8 at the age of 35 years old, he became a Buddha. To the world he is known as Shakamuni Buddha, the world-honored one.
For 45 years, Shakamuni Buddha went throughout the country of India preaching the Dharma. His teachings flourished and traveled from India throughout the world.
After the Bodhi Day service there will be a sing-a-long with Lihu‘e and West Kaua‘i Hongwanji members with ‘ukulele accompaniment.
Refreshments will conclude the day’s joyous event in celebration of Shakamuni Buddha’s enlightenment.
