Screening is the process of testing large numbers of persons with a fast, simple procedure that can identify those who are more likely to have a problem in those areas of concern. It is not a diagnostic procedure, but indicates those persons who should have further testing to determine if help is needed.
The “Eye Screening” entails the use of charts and devices made specifically for this procedure. The “Hearing Screening” is done using audiometers that can emit the pure tone frequencies and desired intensities of sound.
The Kapa‘a Lions Club suggests to the school staff that those children who show evidence of possible problems be further tested by professional, licensed personnel to determine the extent of the problem.
The Kapa‘a Lions Club may provide limited financial assistance to those parents who need help in paying for the further testing or purchase of the items needed by the children to correct their problems in hearing or sight. The financial assistance will be in line with the requirements established by the Kapa‘a Lions Club.
This year 120 students were tested and 10 children had possible problems in either sight or hearing. Further testing is always suggested since some of the hearing problems are caused by colds or other physical conditions.
The Kapa‘a Lions Club expressed its gratitude to the teachers and staff of both schools for allowing them to provide this important service.
