The Red Raiders of Kaua‘i High School received the No. 3 ranking going into the first round of the First Hawaiian Bank Division Football State Championships, it was announced yesterday at the coaches’ meeting at Aloha Stadium.
The Raiders (5-1 Kaua‘i Interscholastic Federation, 7-1 overall) will play host to the Rough Riders of Roosevelt High School (6-3-1 O‘ahu Interscholastic Association) at 7 p.m. Saturday at Vidinha Stadium.
The game will be broadcast live on OC 16.
Fourth-ranked Bulldogs of Kaimuki High School (10-0 OIA, 10-1) will play Kamehameha Schools-Hawai‘i (8-2 BIIF, 8-4), also at 7 p.m. Saturday, at host site Kaiser High School.
Lahainaluna High School received the top ranking and the first week bye.
The Raiders serve under the coaching of Derek Borrero, who is in his first year as head coach of the varsity level. The Raiders won their fifth straight KIF title three weeks ago when they defeated Waimea High School.
The Raiders have not played a game since winning the KIF but Borrero said he isn’t worried about the team being rusty. They had a night practice under the lights of Vidinha Stadium on Friday.
“I actually kind of like it,” he said. “The time off gave us time to rest and get healthy. So I don’t mind the time off at all.”
The Raiders were the runners-up at last year’s state tournament when they lost to King Kekaulike. Both teams made history by being the first Neighbor Island teams to reach a state championship final.
