Ron Wiley may have been the only one on the panel to successfully predict the high school game last week, but that wasn’t enough to give him the win.
Wiley picked Kaua‘i High School to beat Waimea High School for Waimea’s homecoming in Hanapepe. He also picked Florida, Fresno State, Virginia Tech and USC to win, as did I. And we got those so wrong! I finished last with 6-7. Wiley was next with 7-6.
David Bice, who had been a roll winning multiple weeks, dropped to finish second at 8-4.
Dickie Chang won with his pick of Boise State and finished 9-4.
Beating all of us out was Nancy Burton of Lihu‘e. Burton, who beat the panel several weeks ago, entered again and has $50 more in her wallet.
“It’s crazy,” she said. “Last time, when I picked Stanford, my husband said to me ‘what are you doing?’ But I got it right.”
And she got 10 out of 13 right this time.
Coming up on Sunday is the game everyone is calling “Super Bowl XLI 1/2.” New England goes to Indianapolis for the battle of the unbeaten teams. Here was my dilemma with my pick. I like the Colts because I like Peyton Manning (and I have Marvin Harrison and Dallas Clark on my fantasy team). But, New England is crushing everyone in sight, partly because, in my opinion, the Pats are trying to make up for Spy Gate. Either way, I like the Colts, but this Football Frenzy isn’t about who I like, it’s about who I think is going to win, right? So, I went with the Pats.
We shall see what happens, I suppose.
