Fred “Freddy” Miller Aki Sr. died Oct. 23, 2007, at his home in Anahola with his family by his side at the age of 67.
Born May 5, 1940, in Lihu‘e, he was known by many as a kind and gentle man, “a man with a big heart.” He worked for 25 years at the Kauai Surf Hotel and retired after 17 years of service for the County of Kauai Parks Division. He loved the ocean and grew up in Anahola where he spent most of his younger days in the water. His love for surfing took him as far as Kekaha where he was known to have been the first surfer to surf with his fiberglass board. His passion for fishing took him to the North Shore where he was embraced by his extended families of Hanalei. He gave many hours volunteering in community cleanups, fund-raisers, cleaning yards and numerous other projects. He loved his family and enjoyed watching his grandchildren at baseball, basketball and football games, hula and rodeo. One of his favorite pastimes was hanging out at Anahola beach with his “wala wala” gang.
He is survived by his loving wife, Wanda K. Holt Aki; sons Fred (Traci) Aki of Wailua, John (Mel) Aki of Maui, Lono Aki of Anahola, Jason Carvalho of Lihu‘e; daughters Melissia (Joe) Sugai of Anahola, Naylene (Cary) Aki of Anahola. Preceded in death by his father Miller Aki, he is survived by his mother MaryAnn Aki, sister Marian (Robert) Delapenia; brothers William (Hazel) Aki, Alfred (Helen) Aki, Richard (Priscilla) Aki, Melvin (Sandra) Aki and George (Joyce) Aki, brothers and sisters-in-law Bennett (Elaine) Holt, Annette (Robert) Spencer, Lihu‘e (Chris) Miller, Rosie Holt, Eula (Leonard) Sablan, Pelane (Estherlita) Fernandez, Norman (Bev) Holt, Ricky Waalani James (Di) Anakalea; grandchildren Fred III (Suliana), Clarence (Chelsea), Ka‘ana, Keali‘i, Sam, Maile (Alika) Marla, Ana (Jessica), Joeddy, Nohi, Kapua, Jolene, Joey, Mathew, Mandy, Andrew, Leland, Hiku, Cary Jr., Lele (Mo), Hana, Alexic, Mana, Kuhiau and Jasmine. Also greatgrandchildren RJ, Kala‘e, Ihi‘ihi; hanai childen Kahanu, Sauhoy (Reta), Tigger, Shannie, Keawe (Tracey), Pi‘ikea, baby, Chyson, Ashley, Stana, Candy, Sherlina, Tatum and pet Yoda. numerous nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles, cousins and friends.
Services will be on Sunday, Oct. 28, at his home in Anahola. Visitation will be from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. with a celebration of his life to follow. Arrangements are provided by Borthwick Kauai Mortuary.
