PO‘IPU — A rapidly growing brush fire gained momentum in Po‘ipu yesterday as emergency responders worked to get it under control and prevent it from jumping the road.
Initial reports estimated between 50 to 80 acres were burned in the fire, which began at 3:58 p.m. near the entrance to CJM Stables and on the mauka side of the Po‘ipu Bay Golf Course Maintenance Shop.
Responding firefighters from Kapa‘a, Koloa, Lihu‘e and Kalaheo fire stations and Department of Natural Land Resources officers were supported by four brush trucks, two fire engines and two Inter-Island helicopters, Air-1 and Air-2, to extinguish the blaze. Kaua‘i police and Grove Farm personnel also responded to the fire.
Around 4:06 p.m., construction crews and nearby contractors with water trucks were offering support to firefighters, a dispatcher said.
Around 4:42 p.m., firefighters were working to move boulders to provide a landing spot for the air support, according to scanner traffic.
By 6:30 p.m., officials deemed the fire under control with the exception of a few hot spots.
