A Po‘ipu developer made it possible for a large number of children to benefit from reading, said Lihu‘e Library head librarian Carolyn Larson.
“Scott Gates said he will take care of children’s purchases at the Friends of the Library used book sale,” Larson said.
Larson was on hand Friday when shoppers took advantage of lunch hour to hunt through aisles of books and video for that special treat.
Lexiann Hiltsley and her mom were pleasantly surprised when Jan TenBruggencate, one of the volunteers for the Friends of the Lihu‘e Library, informed her that her purchases of a video and books qualified to be placed on Gates’ tab.
But beyond Hiltsley’s purchases, Larson said a large number of books went out to a Koloa School reading program.
“Hartwell Blake was in earlier today and picked up titles for his program at Koloa School,” Larson said.
Despite the steady flow of shoppers and bibliophiles, Larson said there are a lot for people to choose from.
“We’ll have new titles and items coming out Saturday morning,” she said. “Among these are music CDs.”
When the doors opened Friday, Larson said shoppers could choose from selections in both children and adult categories of fiction and non-fiction. Additionally, there are a good variety of biographies and Hawaiiana books as well as videos, she said.
The used book sale runs from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday, and on Sunday, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
TenBruggencate said, “There will be some real bargains on Sunday when we’re going to be desperate to get rid of books.
The former writer for The Honolulu Advertiser said a shopper even paid an extra dollar for her purchase after he signed her book.
“He’s a real good volunteer,” Larson said.
