Hawai‘i Department of Education Superintendent Patricia Hamamoto recently filled four positions on the DOE’s leadership team.
Among those promoted was former complex area superintendent for Kaua‘i schools, Daniel Hamada, who now serves as assistant superintendent in the Office of Curriculum, Instruction and Student Support.
The veteran educators, including one who changes seats on the leadership team and three new members, were nominated by the superintendent and confirmed by the Board of Education.
“Each of these professional educators has solid credentials and leadership experiences,” Hamamoto said in a press release. “I welcome them to the team, and thank them for their continuing commitment and service to the students and staff of Hawai‘i’s schools.”
Hamada, a longtime member of the team, moved to the state office after serving on Kaua‘i from 1999 through this year. Prior to that appointment, Hamada was principal of ‘Ele‘ele Elementary School and acting principal at Kekaha Elementary School. During his career, he also served as vice principal at Kapa‘a High and Intermediate School, and he was a counselor, teacher and acting vice principal at Kapa‘a Elementary School. Hamada’s newest appointment was confirmed June 7.
William Arakaki is now complex area superintendent for Kapa‘a, Kaua‘i and Waimea complexes in the Kaua‘i Administrative District.
Before stepping in to fill Hamada’s shoes, Arakaki served as principal of Waimea High School, vice principal at Kapa‘a middle and high schools, Wilcox Elementary administrative trainee, and a Kaua‘i High School teacher. Arakaki also taught at Kaua‘i High’s alternative learning center, Waipahu High School and Kailua High School. His appointment was confirmed Aug. 2.
The two other appointments to the leadership team include Bruce Anderson, complex area superintendent with the Maui Administrative District, and Teri Ushijima, complex area superintendent with the Central Administrative District.
