HANALEI — Four firefighters and emergency responders in Inter-island Helicopters Air 1 rescued an injured German tourist hiking the Kalalau Trail yesterday afternoon, county officials said. The hiker suffered serious injury, according to Mary Daubert, county spokeswoman.
Initial reports indicated the man, estimated to be in his 50s, injured his hip, however, at press time it was unclear whether any bones had been broken.
Emergency responders got the call reporting the injured hiker at 12:52 p.m., Daubert said.
The hiker was about a 1 1/2 miles in on the Hanakapi‘ai part of the trail when Hanalei firefighters responded — two of them by foot — in an attempt to rescue him. Meanwhile, firefighters from Rescue 3 in Lihu‘e were en route.
Inter-island Helicopter, manning Air 1, met rescuers at Ke‘e Beach, owner Ken D’Attilio said.
Rescuers then strapped the hiker in and airlifted him out of the area to be treated at Wilcox Hospital.
