PUHI — Kaimana Girod had his first race of the season, and the reappearance of Jayme Jacinto helped Waimea High School sweep the latest Kaua‘i Interscholastic Federation cross country race Saturday.
Hosted by Kaua‘i High School, the course was reconfigured in consideration for the new access road being built on the boundary of the Kaua‘i Community College and the Kilohana Estate.
Waimea girls, filling in the No. 1 and No. 2 positions, topped the girls’ race with 29 points followed by Kapa‘a High School at 56 points and Kula School at 66 points.
The Menehune men edged out Kaua‘i by 9 points, Girod leading the Waimea boys who collected 28 points over Kaua‘i’s 39 points. Kapa‘a followed at 68 points with Island School tallying 113 points.
Caralyn Broyles set the pace for the girls’ field with a 21:35 first finish followed by Natasha Abadila at 22:25.80.
Gillian Picket filled in the third overall slot at 22:56.90 with Jacinto crossing fourth overall at 23:38.
Jessie Austin of Kula took advantage of the downhill to overtake Kapa‘a runners to finish fifth overall at 23:55.20.
Stephanie Foster, Kapa‘a’s first girl finisher, was seventh overall at 24.:23.20 followed by Kirsten McCracken who crossed 10th overall at 24:43.
Hartley Dabin (26:18.20) was Island School’s first runner at 20th overall, and Elizabeth Schiller (24:05.80) was the first of four Red Raider ladies to finish.
A strong start by one of the Kaua‘i runners set the stage for the boys’ race as Pierce Murphy of Kula Intermediate and High latched onto the cue to set the pace for the field, finishing with a dominating 17:38.20.
That was over a minute faster than Girod, last year’s top male runner, who came in second overall at 18:41.
A red shirt followed as Christopher Barich crossed third overall at 18:58.60, edging out Kapa‘a’s Adam Kerlin who filled in fourth at 19:01.50, Barich looking back over his shoulder as he
approached the uphill finish line.
“This is the first time I’ve beaten him,” Barich said afterward.
Waimea and Kaua‘i were nip-and-tuck through the first eight places before Waimea finished Benji Baclig (19:37.50) and Peter Joyce (19:59.3) in eighth and ninth places, respectively.
Chevas Takasaki (20:27.40) crossed at 13th as the next Kaua‘i runner, but Waimea saw runners fill in the No. 14 and 15 slots with Joshua Quinlan (20:33.80) and Gregory Griffin (20:39.40) for the win.
Following Kerlin, Kapa‘a saw scores from Cole Pemberton (20:19.60-12th), Steven Pascual (21:26.70-24th), Chazton Sasil (21:41.70-26th) and Jonathan Ganir (22:27.30-28th).
