A former Kaua‘i Youth Basketball Association player and relative to many island residents, Stetson Furtado died from injuries sustained in a crash Friday evening on Kaumuali‘i Highway.
The 20-year-old Kekaha resident was riding westbound on a Suzuki motorcycle when the bike hit a Dodge station wagon driven by Louis Parraga, a friend and former neighbor of the young man’s late grandfather, Francis Furtado.
“It saddens me that a young boy like that lost his life,” said Parraga, 79, of Kekaha.
Furtado and his brother Stanley played basketball together several years ago for the Lihu‘e Blazers.
Karen Matsumoto, a Kaua‘i Youth Basketball Association contact person, said the brothers’ mother, the late Katherine Furtado, used to coach the team.
“He was just starting his life,” Parraga said.
Furtado’s father, Frank, could not be reached for comment.
After the accident around 5:44 p.m., Friday, Furtado was taken to Kaua‘i Veterans Memorial Hospital where he died. Parraga was uninjured in the accident.
An investigation into the cause is underway.
