Tante Azares, head of the college’s Automotive Mechanics Tech program as well as one of the leaders of the upcoming “Show Your Wheels” car show, said next week’s auto show will benefit the students in KCC’s automotive classes.
Proceeds from the second annual Show Your Wheels” go directly to scholarships for automotive students, Azares said.
In addition, the students will be helping to set up on Sept. 21 for the Sept. 22 show, which will display automotive finery and accessories.
Sponsored by the Associated Students of the University of Hawai‘i — Kaua‘i Community College, gates to the show open at 10 a.m., with the many cars, trucks and motorcycles on exhibit until 4 p.m.
Azares said due to the construction of the road for Island School, this year’s show will be relocated to the back campus and there will be signs to direct people to the right area.
Applications for sponsors, vendors as well as automotive enthusiasts hoping to display their wheels are currently being accepted, Azares said.
Entry forms are available at the college’s Campus Center Student Lounge, its Automotive Department, Auto Stylin’ and Performance in Kapaia, and Next Level Custom in Puhi.
Starting last year, the student association and the college’s automotive department put together the show to promote awareness of Kaua‘i’s automotive transportation industry while continue to generate funds for an automotive scholarship fund.
“Last year, the response was so great, we were able to award two scholarships to KCC automotive students,” Azares said. “And since it was the first year, we had a lot of input from the public.”
Based on this, the show will include prizes for the Best of the Best in cars, trucks, motorcycles and an overall category.
In the cars division, categories include sport compact, muscle, street rod, classic, race car and mini dragster. Truck categories include 4x4s, big rigs and sports/mini. The motorcycle division includes and street bikes.
In addition to vehicles and products, Azares said there will be lots of food available from vendors as well as entertainment.
Admission is $8 at the gate, and youngsters 10 and under enter for free.
Entry fees are $35 for advance registration and $45 for those wanting to register at the gate.
