WAIMEA — Tatum Gonsalves had three aces, four digs and seven kills in Waimea High School’s win over Kaua‘i High School. The defending Kaua‘i Interscholastic Federation champions won their first regular season match in three games, 29-27, 25-22 and 25-11.

Cheri Kua put up solid defense, coming up with a big solo block in the second game and was a part of seven double blocks on the night. Setter Josey Jacinto tossed up eight assists.
If the first game was any indication of what’s to come for the season, then Kaua‘i (1-1) proved itself to be a challenge for Waimea (1-0). The game went into extra play, with Waimea coming out on top. Kaua‘i, for the most part, was playing good volleyball. But Waimea committed less errors and also had a better serving percentage.
Kaua‘i still put up a fight in the second. At one point, Kaua‘i held a 7-point lead. But Waimea’s defense basically shutdown Kaua‘i’s offense coming up with the blocks and digs. An ace by Kua tied the game. Waimea would go on to win that game by 3 points.
Kaua‘i just broke down in the third game. Waimea had a 16-point lead on them at 21-5. The Menehune got close to putting the Red Raiders away early, but Kaua‘i crept up on them, holding them at match point for five plays.
Kaua‘i attempted a dink but Waimea’s Brytney Yadao-Lanning was there to plop right back over for the win.
Waimea travels to Kapa‘a on Wednesday.
In earlier games, Kaua‘i‘s junior varsity won its match against Waimea in three games, 25-11, 25-18, 25-15.
Island School played its first exhibition volleyball match against Kapa‘a High School’s junior varsity team. Kapa‘a won in three games, 25-17, 25-10, 25-19.
