HONOLULU — Three Kamehameha students from Kaua‘i recently concluded their summer with an 11-day trip to the Mu Alpha Theta Mathematics Honor Society’s annual convention.
Senior Ciera Cummings, and juniors Haley Miranda and Alyssa Carveiro were a part of the 21-member Kamehameha Math Team traveling to Tampa, Florida. Kamehameha was Hawai‘i’s only representative among 52 teams and more than 500 participants. Overall, Kamehameha placed 13th in team standings.
It was the first convention for Miranda and Carveiro who gained valuable competitive experience. Individually, Cummings brought home trophies for 10th place in Complex Numbers, and 5th place in Alpha Gemini, a two-person team test.
Ciera Cummings, who serves as Kamehameha’s Math Team president, became the first Hawai‘i student to be elected as Student Delegate President of Mu Alpha Theta.
Mu Alpha Theta is an international mathematics honor society for students attending high school or a two-year college, with chapters across the nation, as well as Korea. Membership of MAT currently numbers 60,000 strong.
