Kaua’i Dance Theatre classes resume August 10-15 in Kalaheo and on August 16 in Lihu’e. The 16 week summer/fall term will include a December showcase performance and breaks will coordinate with the public school calendar. Ballet/pointe, tap, jazz, creative movement and morning exercise classes will be offered.
Director Janie Crane has been a student of dance herself for over 40 years and views dance as an opportunity to better oneself in many aspects of life, not the least of which is the health benefits of physical activity. She was pleased with the chance to be her “student’s student” this summer by taking classes from Darcy Naganuma who studied with Kaua’i Dance Theatre for 11 years. Other KDT alumni include Julie Parker who has danced professionally and is currently working on her MFA at UC-Irvine on a full tuition scholarship and Brittany Schreiber who teaches full-time at Arthur Murray Studios in Los Angeles and is a competitive ballroom dancer.
The discipline, grace and physical exertion demanded by classical dance training can be appreciated by both the serious and casual student alike. Kaua’i Dance Theatre’s program offers various levels of age and ability appropriate classes for students age 4 and older.
Morning “Stretch and Tone” and “BalleTone” classes for adults are ongoing and new attendees are welcome anytime. Through the ticket sales and concession fund-raising efforts of the parents, monetary donations to the Kaua‘i Food Bank, the Earnest Morgan Endowment for Performing Arts Education, and the KDT scholarship program were made possible.
