PO‘IPU — School bells were ringing elsewhere when three students received their scholarships Wednesday morning.
The Rotary Club of Poipu Beach honored three second-year culinary arts students from the Kaua‘i Community College with a partial installment of their individual scholarships at its meeting at the Po‘ipu Beach Broiler.
“We want these students to focus on their academic work instead of trying to balance a work schedule and school,” said Terry Smith, chairman of the club’s Scholarship Committee. “One day, these fine students will be preparing cuisine in our local establishments.”
Students Gracean Manuel, Jacky Villanueva and Naomi Rivera each received checks for $800 to help defray the expenses of their education at KCC. Smith said the girls will receive another $800 check once they successfully complete their course, making the scholarships a total of $1,600 for each student.
Smith acknowledged the help of Chef Martina Hilldorfer of the KCC Culinary Arts department for her help in selecting recipients for the scholarships.
KCC’s first day of class for the fall semester is Aug. 20.
