With high-profile paddling events on-island today and tomorrow, it seems that anyone wanting to make a last-minute trip to or from Kaua‘i this weekend might have to, well, paddle.
While the three main inter-island airlines have a few weekend seats remaining, they are few and far between.
“They are effectively sold out,” Hawaiian Airlines spokesman Patrick Dugan said.
Even after adding an extra flight on Sunday, almost all of Hawaiian’s seats are spoken for.
In the same boat, go! is just about booked solid through the weekend with “extremely high traffic” due to today’s Hawaiian Canoe Racing Association State Championship Regatta and tomorrow’s Sunday’s Na Pali Challenge
“We are at capacity on almost every flight,” go! spokesman Joe Bock said yesterday.
To accommodate paddlers, Bock said go! arranged two round-trip charter flights. One team arrived last night from Honolulu; another arrives today from Maui.
Aloha Airlines spokesman Stu Glauberman said despite many sold-out flights, there are still a number of spaces available over the weekend.
“If you plan to travel, you’re going to have to be flexible about departure times,” he added.
While there is no rule or regulation requiring airlines to keep a few seats open, many do hold on to some for late-booking passengers, Glauberman said.
Of course, customers will likely pay a higher price for those much-coveted flights.
