Doctors offer fresh start
Kauai Medical Clinic, working cooperatively with our independent doctor colleagues, has provided almost 40 years of medical leadership to benefit Kauai through high quality, and accessible primary and specialty care. Today, new leadership at KMC has emerged with a re-commitment to be open, inclusive, and community oriented in its decision making process.
We, the undersigned KMC/HPH members, want to put the disagreements and missteps associated with the HPH merger and divisive nurse’s strike behind us. HPH, to its credit, has brought wonderful new facilities, technologies, and financial stability, which would otherwise not be available to our health care system. It is time to simply bury past issues; to move forward. We want to rededicate our energies to our mission; serving our Kauai community with accessible, quality healthcare that surpasses expectations.

Paying for infrastructure
In response to the endless letters that pour into The Garden Island daily about the traffic, the dirty developers, and all the problems that plague our county due to the poor administration of our elected officials, let’s put another perspective on the table.
Do we really believe that all of the traffic problems are from the recent approvals of developments? Folks, I hate to break it to you, but traffic was horrible way before they arrived. The root of the problem is our infrastructure was laid out decades ago and we have simply outgrown it. That’s what happens when communities grow and you don’t prepare for it. So, I get a kick out of all the people ranting about stopping growth, because it’s destroying the island. “Gosh darn it, I moved here and it was such a beautiful spot, now nobody else should move here and destroy it.” A bit hypocritical? Does anybody actually believe if we stop all development, the traffic in Kapa‘a is suddenly going to flow? I hate to break it to you, but it’s not. Not only will it still be clogged for decades as the local government makes excuses, but the one hope we had on getting it solved was kicked off the island. Folks, the only way to get problems fixed, is to go to people who have the money to fix them. Yup, the developers. Why aren’t we approaching this differently? Excuse me Mr. Developer; You’re building condos in Kapa‘a? Well, let’s see, Kapa‘a needs some assistance on traffic and housing. Your share is to assist in a new bridge and 20 affordable homes.
Next! Ms. Developer, you’re building luxury homes in Koloa? Okay, Koloa needs a new police station.
Next! Now, I don’t know if those are the real needs, but you get my point. We would wake up in 10 years with solutions instead of sitting in this same mess year after year. You realize we’ve been talking about this for 15 years now, and not a thing has happened. Oops sorry, the Kapa‘a bypass was opened. Now, I’m not inviting a full scale assault on our little island from every developer in the nation. Simply, levy the project with reasonable improvements. Some will stay, some won’t be able to afford it and they would move on.
As far as Judge Watanabe’s ruling? This is the same judge who should be under investigation for her bond setting and outright ludicrous sentencing. I’m more fearful of her letting hardened criminals free than the approval of a moratorium. But that’s another letter.

Quit asking … do it
Our elected state officials are continually asking for an Environmental Impact Statement on the activity of the Superferry’s operation. I know of nothing precluding these officials, or anyone else, from commissioning such a study, on their own. The impacts revealed in this study would be quantitative measures, which should then be addressed.
If these same officials were as interested in the physical environment as they were in the political environment, they would generate this information, on their own initiative.
Don’t continue to waste resources, blowing smoke.
