The Hawaii Superferry is moving full steam ahead with its Coast Guard certification and route familiarization voyages back and forth between Kaua‘i, Maui and O‘ahu, said Director of Business Development Terry O’Halloran.
And despite rumors to the contrary, O’Halloran said the “Alakai” did not sustain damages during a stop at Nawiliwili Harbor last week.
In fact, the ship returned to O‘ahu from Maui on Sunday and will head back to Kaua‘i during the first week of August.
Last week there was, however, a small depression in the harbor wharfcreated by a leaking water line, according to Robert Crowell, the Kaua‘i harbors manager for the Department of Transportation. The area had eroded, causing a forklift to fall in.
No property was damaged, though.
According to O’Halloran, a community preview event for the Alakai on-island will be announced soon. A similar open house was held July 14 on O‘ahu; and due to demand, a second preview will take place tomorrow.
Though the date has yet to be announced for Kaua‘i, it will likely take place on a weekend in August, O’Halloran said.
