Students, principals, teachers and special guests gathered at UH-Manoa’s Orvis Auditorium on May 19 for a reading and reception, held to honor the winners of the Hawai‘i Education Association’s Creative Writing Festival. Top place winners were invited to read their winning entries before the audience. The annual event invites entries in four categories, under teacher supervision, from any and all Hawai‘i public school students.
This year, seventh-grader Keri Ann Yatogo of Kapa‘a Middle School was awarded second place in the Grades 7-8 Essay category. Her teacher Theresa Maguire guided her in writing her entry.
There were also three students from Kaua‘i who won the Free Verse category. Kaiwi Aki, third-grader at Kalaheo School, won fourth honorable mention in the grades 1-3 Free Verse category. His teacher, Diane Agee, guided him. Two sixth-grade students from Kapa‘a Middle won in the Free Verse 4-6 category. They were Adam Chandler, who won third place, and Lana S. M. Bilbo who won fourth honorable mention, both under the guidance of teacher Kevin Nunn.
