The North Shore Junior Lifeguard program for ages 8 to 12 will run July 9 to July 13.
Directed by former Kaua‘i lifeguard Pat Durkin, the course teaches personal safety at the beach and pool, rescue techniques using modern lifeguard equipment, swimming rescues and tows, recognizing hazardous ocean conditions, rip current escape, aquatic first aid, and marine ecology.
Beach flags, run-swim-paddle, and surfboard races round out the activities. The 20-hour course meets Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to noon on the North Shore. Pre-registration is required and there is a charge for the program.
