There were three scholarships presented, and the possibility that more would have been awarded.
The Kaua‘i Filipino Chamber of Commerce introduced three of its scholarship recipients who were each awarded $1,000 grants.
Darnell Almarza will be leaving for the University of Las Vegas where she hopes to major in psychology. Tasha Rames, a graduate of Kapa‘a High School, will be aiming for a degree in Graphic Design at the University of Hawai‘i, and Nicole Relacion is heading for the University of Hawai‘i at Hilo where she will be targeting a degree in chemistry while also pursuing studies in astronomy.
These three graduates of Kaua‘i high schools are the most recent scholarship recipients, said Eugene Jimenez, the scholarship committee chairperson for the KFCC.
“We’re expanding,” he said. “We hope to have more scholarships for next year.”
Jimenez said the KFCC scholarships are renewable, meaning if the students maintain their grade point averages in college, they can re-apply for another scholarship next year. He added that financial need is also taken into consideration.
“KFCC also has scholarships for nursing students and certification of nursing,” Jimenez said.
Unfortunately, there were no applicants for those scholarships.
Jimenez said they also provided scholarships for the Leadership Kaua‘i program.
Edie Ignacio, the vice chair of the scholarship committee, said KFCC has been providing scholarships for high school graduates for about four years.
