PUHI — Trailing 5-3 after two rounds, Trevor, representing the Green team, turned things around to win his match against Kyle with a pin.
The Green team took the lead following 17 matches held Wednesday night at the Chiefess Kamakahelei Middle School, hosted by the Kaua‘i Police Activities League.
Mark Ozaki, one of the KPAL Board members as well as one of the wrestling officials, said turnout was not as good due to a lot of the children having other commitments like school open houses and sports.
But for the wrestlers who turned out, the evening was competitive with the Green team edging out the Red team by winning 8 matches to the Red’s 7 wins.
Additionally, 9 of the 17 matches were settled by pins, the Green team taking 6 of the 9 pinfalls while the Red team had 3 of the 9 pins.
Dawson, Mike, Korey, Kaulana, Gage and Trevor won their matches by pins for the Green team with Christopher getting 11 points and Shaine finishing with 9 points.
Thomas, Keenan and Ikaika earned pins for the Red team. Haylie picked up 9 points, Kimo finished with 3 points, Brandon had 6 points and Jacob J. finished with 7 points, outscoring Gage by just 1 point at the buzzer.
Ozaki said KPAL will take next week off before hosting the KPAL Wrestling Championships at the CKMS open gym area on May 2 starting at 6 p.m.
