Manuel Balisbisana Agcaoili
Manuel Balisbisana Agcaoili of ‘Ele‘ele died Dec. 27, 2006, at Wilcox Memorial Hospital at the age of 80.
Born Oct. 1, 1926, in Pallas, Vintar, Ilocos Norte, Philippines, he retired from McBryde Sugar Co. as a sugar processor.
Preceded in death by his parents Lucio and Presca Agcaoili; sister Angela Maltezo; and half-brother Florentino Agcaoili, he is survived by his wife Erlinda Robles Agcaoili of ‘Ele‘ele; daughter Evelyn (Ludi) Pascua of Puhi; son Reynold (Amy) Agcaoili of ‘Ele‘ele; three brothers, Florencio (Gloria) Agcaoili of Koloa, Claro (Dominga) Agcaoili of Porterville, Calif. and Florendo (Virgie) Agcaoili of the Philippines/Stockton, Calif.; three sisters, Emilia Carmen (Francisco) Jacinto of Koloa and Zenaida Ramos and Caridad Rivera, both of the Philippines; two half-brothers, Leandro (Lina) Agcaoili of Lihu‘e and Vicente (Naty) Agcaoili of Wailua; and seven grandchildren, Michael Agcaoili, Jordan, Cherish and Krystle Pascua and Reyson, Reygan and Rey C. Agcaoili. He is also survived by numerous sisters-in-law, brothers-in-law, cousins, nieces and nephews.
Friends may visit with the family on Friday, Jan. 12, at Borthwick Kauai Mortuary Chapel in Koloa from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. and again on Saturday, Jan. 13, at Holy Cross Church in Kalaheo from 8 a.m. to 10 a.m. where Mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m. by Father Edison. Burial to follow at Kauai Memorial Gardens.
Leilani Sanchez
Leilani O Kawaihine Keala O Napua Souza Sanchez of Kapa‘a died at home on Jan. 2, 2007, at the age of 81.
She was born on June 19, 1925, in Lihu‘e and was the owner/operator of Sanchez bus service, servicing Kapa‘a Elementary and High School for 35 years. She also worked in the cafeteria at St. Catherine School and was a kupuna at Wilcox Elementary School.
She is survived by her husband of 64 years, Manuel Sanchez Jr.; children Gerald (Betty Lou) Sanchez, Gordon (Healani) Sanchez, Rodney (Lori) Sanchez, Doreen (Harold) Lewis and Robin (Char) Sanchez; siblings Gertrude Johnson, Marsha (Willie) Martin, Antone (Queenie) Souza, Frank (Emily) Souza and Edward (Yvonne) Souza; grandchildren Shawn Sanchez, Shane (Karen) Sanchez, Lisa (John) Latchford, Rod (Ami) Sanchez Jr., Kari (Jim) Gallego, Matthew (Heather) Sanchez, Joshua Sanchez, Jeremy Sanchez, Keala (David) Craft, Tracy (Russell) Fu, Kalei (Jeff) Weir, Kalona (Kendrick) Washington, Sherri (Grant) Holcomb, Shanilyn (Eli) Kreunen and Shandon Kealii Sanchez; 24 great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.
She was preceded in death by her parents Manuel and Emma Souza; brother Clarence Souza Sr.; and sister Judy Ryder.
Memorial services will be held on Wednesday, Jan. 10, at Kauai Veterans Center on Kapule Highway. in Lihu‘e with visitation from 10 a.m. and services beginning at noon.

Downs Michael Van De Veer
Downs Michael Van De Veer of Hanalei died Dec. 19, 2006, at the age of 62.
Born in Alabama during the era of racial segregation and prejudice, he dedicated his life to ending racism and to help build a just and compassionate society. He battled to the end to provide equal rights and justice for all.
A citizen of the world, he was an internationally published freelance journalist. He served as a Peace Corps volunteer in Liberia, Africa, and traveled extensively throughout the world. Most recently he worked with Lions Club International to provide medical equipment for vision care in Nepal. He also served as an advisor to SETU Nepal, a nonprofit organization providing transitional housing for women and children displaced by war.
He served on the Board of the Kekahu Foundation and hosted a musical/discussion show called “Out of the Box: An Answer to the New World Order” on KKCR, Kauai Community Radio.
He is survived by his wife Catherine “Wicki” Van De Veer of Hanalei; son Malcolm X Blake Van De Veer of Maui; Malcolm’s mother Cheryl; brother John Van De Veer; and niece Roxanna and nephew Logan of Santa Cruz, Calif.
At Michael’s request, no service will be held. In his honor an “Out of the Box” fund is being created which will enable KKCR to expand its existing facility to include and support a local news studio to provide a forum for free speech and give a voice to the voiceless Michael worked so hard to preserve.

Cirilo Raposas
Cirilo Raposas of ‘Oma‘o died Jan. 1, 2007, at Garden Isle Healthcare Center at the age of 88.
Born Sept. 20, 1918, in the Philippines, he was a rock quarry operator for Grove Farm Company.
Preceded in death by his son Jose Raposas, he is survived by his wife Rosalina B. Raposas; four daughters, Merlita (Alan) Honma, Helen (Wade Tasaka) Masuda, Josephine Raposas and Adeline (Bruce) Walter; three sons, Jerry Raposas, Lodring (Vivian) Raposas and Edwin (Aurora) Raposas; daughter-in-law Hannah Raposas; 26 grandchildren; 48 great-grandchildren; and five great-great-grandchildren.
Friends may visit with the family from 9 a.m. to 9:45 a.m. on Saturday, Jan.13, at Borthwick Kauai Mortuary Chapel in Koloa, where memorial services will be celebrated at 10 a.m.

Johnny Jay Maglinti of Kalaheo died Jan 3, 2007, at Straub Clinic and Hospital at the age of 79.
Born on July 19, 1927, in Honolulu, he was a bartender at Kauai Hilton & Beach Villas and Outrigger Hotels Hawaii.
He was preceded in death by wife Alice Almeida Maglinti; parents Juan Sr. and Esidra M. Maglinti; brothers Alexander Maglinti, William Maglinti Sr., Antonio “Tony” Maglinti and George Maglinti; and sister Pacita “Pat” Castillo.
He is survived by five sisters, Gloria Santos and Agnes Hoyohoy of O‘ahu, Naty Saflor of Lihu‘e, Lourdes (Domingo) Alisna of Hanama‘ulu and Inky (Pancho) Ortiz of Texas; one brother, Vincent (Kina) Maglinti of O‘ahu; two sisters-in-law, Anna Seabury Maglinti of Wailua Houselots and Rosario “Rose” Maglinti of O‘ahu; three step-children, Landis (Virginia) Fu of New York, Vernon (Lynn) Fu of Lawa‘i and Ilona (Warren) Moritsugu of Koloa; numerous step-grandchildren and great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews and cousins.
