Responding to a distress call that came in at 7:15 p.m. Friday night, the Coast Guard rescued two fishermen onboard the Wahine Kapaloa IV after the vessel ran aground off the Southern tip of Ni‘ihau.
The Coast Guard dispatched an HH-65 Dolphin rescue helicopter crew, which arrived on scene to deal with 8-foot surf and 10-knot wind gusts.
The Coast Guard said the vessel had sunk and both men were spotted waving hand-held lights on a beach, though residents were reported to be salvaging equipment from the boat for most of yesterday.
The boat was equipped with an Emergency Position Indicating Radio Beacon, Coast Guard officials said, which was valuable in locating the vessel.
