HANAPEPE — Kapa‘a High School’s Chance Bukoski scored within seconds of running onto the field yesterday at the Hanapepe Stadium in a rematch against Waimea.
Bukoski would score again in the second half, extending the lead to 2-0. The final goal by Luis Molina ended the afternoon as the Warriors defeated the Menehune 3-0.
The last time the two schools met, the Warriors beat the Menehune 10-0. This time the Menehune were able to keep the Warriors’ scoring to a minimum.
“Not bad huh?” asked Waimea boys head coach Ken Morikawa. “They played three times better than last time. They played much harder.”
Morikawa gave much of the credit to rookie goal keeper Mana Shigematsu.
“This was his first time playing keeper,” Morikawa said. “He played so well. He played his heart out.”
But even with the win, Kapa‘a’s co-captain Nick Arnold knows that the season is only half over.
“It was a great game, but we need to learn to communicate a bit better next time,” he said. “You got to stay ready for every game and just take every win and see what you can do better next time.”
The Kapa‘a girls soccer team continued its dominance in KIF play, beating Waimea 5-0.
The team’s first goal came from Brittany Carvalho, which was followed by a goal from Megan Souza. Keryn Nield brought the ball upfield and tapped it to Lauren Esaki, who netted the third. Tiana Kunioka scored next, then Lizzy Blaylock took a look at the open goal and shot right for the back of the net.
“They did what we practiced,” said Kapa‘a coach Crissy Marti. “We practiced our finishing, our scoring, and we beat our score from last week to win.”
Waimea’s head coach Dan Agan said the team is working on building its skill level.
“I think most of what happened today was small mistakes,” he said. “It’s the small mistakes that we haven’t corrected yet that got to us. We don’t have the strong soccer community that Kaua‘i and Kapa‘a have, but I’m working on it.”
Waimea faces Kaua‘i this Saturday at the Hanapepe Stadium.
