Wailana Borrero allowed just two hits and drove home three runs to lead Kaua‘i High School to a 10-0 win in six innings Saturday.
The win in Game 1 of a double-header gave the Red Raiders the first-round title in KIF girls softball and allows all three teams to enjoy a week off.
Round 2 starts Jan. 3 when Waimea travels to the New Kapa‘a Ball Park for a single game starting at 5:30 p.m.
Kaua‘i bats ignited in the opening frame as Jessica Iwata, celebrating her 15th birthday Thursday, singled and, after stealing second, came home on a Borrero RBI single.
That combination led the Red Raider offensive throughout the day as Iwata went 3-for-4, scored twice and drove in three, including a two-run shot in the fifth inning.
Borrero also had three RBI on the day.
Kapa‘a starter Stephanie Kawamura gave up back-to-back walks to start the inning before Shereen Doi, looking for a walk, chipped an RBI single into centerfield to score Nicole Larue. Iwata followed with a two-run double to plate Jori Jasper and Doi. Just like that, the score was 3-0 with no outs.
Borrero followed with a sac fly to center, scoring Iwata for the four runs on three hits.
Kapa‘a got hits from Loke Manaku and Hanalei Gomes in the fourth and sixth innings, respectively, but both runners were left stranded.
In Game 2, Kaua‘i coach Daryl Borrero switched his starting pitcher and several of his positions to allow more players to gain experience.
That provided an opportunity for Kapa‘a who capitalized on Iwata on the mound to generate four runs en route to a 7-5 victory in the afternoon outing.
With the win, Kapa‘a picks up their second win in the season.
But Kaua‘i still has control of the round and the next softball game will take place Jan. 3 when the Warriors host Waimea at the New Kapa‘a Ball Park starting at 5:30 p.m.
