Kapa‘a High School’s girls soccer team came out on top yesterday defeating Kaua‘i High School 1-0 at Vidinha Stadium.
Both teams were scoreless at the half. Midway through the second, Kapa‘a took the lead when Brittany Carvalho’s free kick whipped right through Kaua‘i’s wall to go straight to the back of the net.
Kapa‘a’s goalie Poe Gantt came up with nine big saves to keep Kaua‘i scoreless.
“They just dominated in the game,” Kapa‘a head coach Crissy Marti said about her players. “Now we know where we are in the ranking. We performed today. Brittany performed today.”
Kaua‘i head coach Blanche Arakaki conceded.
“They just went out there and played well today,” Arakaki said.
Over on the boys side, Kaua‘i showed that statistics don’t really matter, as the game ended 1-1.
Kapa‘a struck first with a goal from Tyler Tangelder 20 minutes into the match. They kept the lead till well into the second half until Kaua‘i’s Pono Mathews found himself in a great position. His header into the net was the tying goal.
Kapa‘a outshot Kaua‘i 14 to 4, giving themselves more opportunities to score but Kapa‘a just couldn’t capitalize on it.
“It wasn’t our A game today,” said Kapa‘a assistant coach Todd Fuerte. “You can take a million shots but it’s the ones that go in the net that count.”
Kaua‘i head coach Mark Brandeburg knows all about that.
“I looked at the stats in the first half and they completely outshot us,” he said. “But we were able to tie it up and almost win. It was a great game as I anticipated. Both programs have good teams this year and it showed in the match.”
Kapa‘a faces Waimea High School at the Hanapepe Stadium Saturday.
