KALAHEO — Kaulupono Girls’ Jayme Jacinto blasted one from three-pointland and added a bucket as the Pono girls outshot the Minihunes 7-2 en route to a 43-31 win Monday.
Joining Jacinto, Vakeesha Lagazo, who finished the contest with game-high 14 points, and Searra Kaohi added field goals for Kaulupono.
The firepower came as Minihune Jondale Accerret-Ipac fouled out in the fifth period. Kaulupono continued the firepower in the sixth frame with a 10-4 showing over the Minihunes for the icing on the cake.
Kaulupono pulled ahead 7-3 in the opening period led by Lagazo’s three points and buckets from Kaohi and Erin Connelly to overcome an aggressive Minihune full-court man defense.
The zone utilized by Kaulupono was effective in holding the Minihune to just one score, a trey from Sanida Pahulehua, that prevented a shutout in the period.
Facing a new crop of players, the Minihune rebounded in the second period 7-6 behind from Bristy Agu and buckets from Pahulehua and Brandee Victorino while Kaulupono answered on a four-point effort from BreeAnn Cox-Abuan and a bucket from Paige Connelly.
The Minihune continued the onslaught in the third frame 7-4 on another Agu three-point bomb and buckets from Pahulehua and Victorino. The effort paid off in a 17-17 halftime stalemate.
More jockeying in the fourth frame as Kaulupono was just a point better than the Minihune 8-9 with Lagazo leading the charge with five points to set the stage for the final two periods.
Following Lagazo, Jacinto finished with 9 points with Kaohi and Erin Connelly finishing with 6 marks apiece. Abuan-Cox finished with four, Shayna Alop and Paige Connelly’s pair rounding out the winning math.
Pahulehua paced the Minihune’s balanced offense with 9 points followed by Agu, Victorino and Robin Moura each adding 6 points. Pairs from Kawai Pascua and Jazzelyn Bradbury rounded out the effort.
Tori Tuttle finished with 10 points and Kaira Kupihea added 9 marks as Kalalea smothered the Lihu‘e Kamakazes 31-10 in the opener.
Kira Nakamura and Lynsi Nakamura each added four points, Shayln Tupou and Jaime Iwasaki each fired a pair in the win.
Makana Fujimoto paced the Kamakazes with six points followed by Kylie Barba and Lacey Lucas each finishing with a pair in the effort.
