Elsie Victorino
Elsie Bettencourt Victorino of Kapa‘a, died Nov. 28, 2006, at her home at the age of 88.
Born June 18, 1918, in Hawai‘i, she worked in the Kapa‘a School cafeteria until her retirement.
Preceded in death by her husband Alfred Victorino, sister Eleanor Bettencourt and brother Manuel Bettencourt, she is survived by four children: sons, Damien Victorino Sr. of Kapa‘a and Gary Victorino of Washington; daughters, Veronica Smith of San Diego, Calif., and Diane Stibal of Thousand Oaks, Calif.; brothers, George Bettencourt, Albert Bettencourt, Harold Bettencourt, and William Bettencourt; sisters, Lorraine Lizama, Carrie Vilela and Marjorie Brown; six grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.
Friends may visit with the family from 9 a.m. on Wednesday, Dec. 6, at St. Catherine Church in Kapa‘a, where services will begin at 10 a.m. Burial will follow in St. Catherine cemetery.

Helen Stevens
Helen Stevens of Lihu‘e, died Nov. 28, 2006, at Wilcox Memorial Hospital at the age of 84.
Born April 30, 1922, in Taloga, Okla., she was a teacher of Library Science at the University of Hawai‘i. She was also a practicing librarian with the Library of Congress, with the Food and Agriculture of the United Nations and the school library for the state of Maryland.
She is survived by her husband Robert Steves of Lihu‘e; two daughters, Ruth (Cary) Wilson Robertson of Palo Alto, Calif., and Hope C. (Peter) Stevens, of Davis, Calif.; and four grandchildren.
Private services are planned. Arrangements are being handled by Borthwick Kauai Mortuary.
Takeshi Matsuoka
Takeshi Matsuoka of Koloa died at Hale Kupuna Heritage Home on Nov. 24, 2006, at the age of 94.
He was born on Oct. 3, 1912 on Kaua‘i and was a maintenance mechanic with Lihue Sugar Plantation.
He is survived by four sons; Wayne (Diane) Matsuoka of Lihu‘e, Elliot (Sharyn) Matsuoka of Torrence, Calif., Bert (Janette) Matsuoka of Koloa, Scot Matsuoka of Honolulu; one brother, Hiroshi (Hiroko) Matsuoka of ‘Ele‘ele, two sisters, Lily (Thomas) Maeda of Honolulu, Dora (Eddie) Takashima of Gardena, Calif.; eight grandchildren, three great-grandchildren, numerous nieces and nephews.
Private graveside services were held. The family requests no koden.
Kauai Memorial Gardens & Funeral Home assisted the family with arrangements.
Howard Iwai
Howard Ken Iwai of Kapa‘a, died at home on Nov. 15, 2006, at the age of 67.
Born in Kapa‘a on Aug. 28, 1939, he was a highway maintenance supervisor with the state of Hawai‘i.
He is survived by brother, Paul (Cathy) Iwai of Kapa‘a; sister, Patsy (Brad) Imano of Kapa‘a; numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.
Funeral service officiated by the Rev. Mary E. Koppel will begin at 1 p.m. on Saturday, Dec. 9, at his residence 5337-C Hauaala Road, Kapa‘a. Casual attire is suggested and that flowers be omitted.

Leif Anthony Hendricksen
Leif Anthony Hendricksen of Kapa‘a died on Nov. 25, 2006, at Wilcox Memorial Hospital. He is survived by his parents Mario and Dawn Hendricksen of Kapa‘a; and brother, Kahikapu of Honolulu.
Graveside services will be held on Friday, Dec. 8, at 3:30 p.m. at Kauai Memorial Gardens.

Goichi Shimanuki
Goichi Shimanuki of Kahului died Nov. 22, 2006, at his home at the age of 88.
Born Dec. 18, 1917, in Pa‘ia, Maui, he was an assistant manager for Matson.
He is survived by three sons, Neal Masao Shimanuki, Lon Mitsuo (Adele) Shimanuki and Ted Shiro (Suzanne) Shimanuki; daughter Lynn Emiko (Wayne) Axelson, brothers, Tokio Shimanuki, Joji Shimanuki, and Hachiro Shimanuki; sisters, Fumiko Nagata, Miyoko Kato, Bessie Ono, and Faith Bagley; and 10 grandchildren.
A service over urn will be held on Saturday, Dec. 2, at the Pa‘ia Mantokuji Mission at 4 p.m. Visitation will begin at 3 p.m. A private family inurnment will take place at a later date. The family requests casual attire.
