Thank you, veterans
On Veterans Day, it is my custom to personally thank the veterans that I encounter during the day.
This year I find it important to go beyond my circle of friends and family and send out my sincere thanks to all veterans for their service to our country.
A special thank you goes out to those currently serving in the Middle East. The recent national elections have created an uncertainty about the future of the war and its outcome. I, for one, will stand behind each and every one of you no matter what the outcome. I know that the only way America can lose this war is if we at home lose our will. It takes a special soldier to serve during times like these. All of you are volunteers who have come forth to serve your country.
For that I am eternally grateful.
God bless each and everyone of you.

Governor and teachers
It was disappointing to me, as a former teacher, to hear Gov. Linda Lingle, in her early victory speech on election night give thanks to teachers for their support and then immediately acknowledge the deplorable situation of so few education dollars ending up in the classroom.
Why has this happened under Gov. Lingle’s watch and what has she done about it the last four years? What will she do about it in the next four years?
It was also disappointing to read reports that Gov. Lingle broke all previous campaign spending records in the state of Hawai‘i. I wonder why she didn’t support a “cap” and then re-direct any excess money into classrooms across the state?
It’s not too late to do so with any “surplus” money in the governor’s war chest. Doing so would really thank teachers in a way which is meaningful — in their classrooms, which will have a direct impact on our children. I would respectfully suggest the governor put her money where her mouth is.

Please save the salt ponds
I just wanted to write to tell you how happy I am that the situation with the salt ponds and the drug rehabilitation center is finally being recognized. While this island definitely needs a rehabilitation center, picking a high tourist area with such historical significance and destroying a family’s source of income was just plain wrong of our mayor.
Has he forgotten that this is a democratic society and he is not a dictator? The people are sending him a message and I hope he will take the time to hear what is being said, and I hope the salt ponds will be saved from any further contamination.
Thank you so much for covering this story.

Left-wing hate mongers
I am bothered by the left-wing hate mongers whose words and actions embolden the terrorists. The war against terrorists in Iraq is not “botched.”
The war effort has, however, been extended because Americans are not united behind the cause to defeat our enemies. America’s enemies are not interested in killing our leadership; their goal is to kill American citizens … all of us … even Muslim Americans.
Fortunately, we have a president who “gets it” and is willing to protect all of us … even those who don’t “get it” and seem to side with the terrorists.
As long as our enemies see division in our country (such as cartoons ridiculing our leadership), their numbers will grow along with their will to defeat us. Sadly, we probably will not unite against the terrorists until after a major attack within our borders which kills hundreds of thousands of Americans … not just thousands.

No laughing matter
The Ed Stein “cartoon” showing President George Bush in the middle of our American soldier’s gravestones saying: “No offense intended guys. It was just a botched war” is reprehensible in content and purpose.
Hiding behind the “syndicated” sources that “poke fun” at everybody doesn’t diminish your responsibility as editor of our only newspaper here to show some decency and common sense. Are you reviewing articles, cartoons and photos personally before publication? Do you think that publishing such “cartoons” is fair to our president or the soldiers in the field?
Your “Editor’s Note” to Gini Stoddard was very helpful in resolving any doubts as to where you stand on this issue: “…our readers should know that yesterday’s cartoon was in no way intended to diminish the casualties suffered in the Iraq war, American or otherwise.” “American or otherwise?”… each tombstone depicted has an American flag next to it. Then you get sarcastic by saying: “Also, we hope you recycled the newspaper instead of threw it away. Mahalo for reading.”
Very unprofessional.

Editor’s note: Respecting the sanctity of human life is a human trait, not a stand on an issue. Sarcasm, at times, bleeds onto the opinion page — unprofessional? … OK … but we will continue to allow it.
Aloha from Alaska
I would like to take this time to thank my niece Shaylene Iseri-Carvalho for the commendable statement she has made in the papers with her concern for another seat in the County Council.
As former residents of Kaua‘i, yes, we know there is need for more improvement for Kaua‘i. Thank you (Choriki) for making sure things are needed to be changed in a positive manner and yes, we do “miss” Kaua‘i, as it will always be our home no matter where we go.
Being with so many grandchildren and great-grandchildren who are in the picture now, if it cannot help us now, as least in the near future with your blessings, they will be able to go back to Kaua‘i and make it their home also.
Keep up the good and strong campaign and I know when they realize the difference you do make in being a councilmember and positive and strong in what you do believe in, Kaua‘i will be for all whoever desires’ to come to the island.
May God Bless you and your “hardworking family” there, and we are here in Barrow cheering you on for a better Kaua‘i … much love to you and all the ‘ohana there on Kaua‘i …
Aloha to all Kaua‘i.
